Clear PVC and green mesh straight drop blinds enclosing a cafe outdoor dining area

Track-free outdoor blinds

Straight drop outdoor blinds

A simple, adaptable outdoor blind for patios, pergolas and cafe frontages where side tracks are unnecessary or cannot be fitted.

Simple and adaptable

Useful shade without a track running down each side.

The fabric rolls from a headbox and hangs freely between its fixing points. Without side channels, the blind can suit openings with limited posts, irregular edges or areas where a lighter-looking installation is preferred.

The bottom rail is secured when the blind is lowered. Depending on the structure, this may use straps, clips, pins or tie-down points. In some sheltered installations, suitable lower anchors can hold the blind away from the opening on an angle.

Why choose straight drop

Flexible shade for open structures.

01

No side tracks

Ideal where posts are unavailable, side channels would look too bulky or the opening needs to remain visually open.

02

Adaptable fixing points

The bottom rail can be restrained to the floor, railing, posts or other suitable structural points.

03

Angled positioning

Where the site allows, tie-down points can hold the lowered blind outward on an angle for shade and clearance.

04

Wide opening coverage

A practical option for verandahs, pergolas, hospitality frontages and broad outdoor openings.

05

Simple operation

A removable crank handle provides controlled operation without permanent chains or cords.

06

Lower system cost

Fewer guide components can make straight drop a more economical choice than a full track-guided system.

Flexible installation

Vertical when you need enclosure. Angled when the structure allows.

The track-free design gives the installer more freedom to work with railings, uneven boundaries and open-sided structures. Every fixing arrangement still needs suitable structural anchor points.

Vertical dropA clean way to shade a wide opening without adding side tracks.
Straight drop blinds held outward on an angle over a residential deck
Angled restraintSuitable lower fixing points can pull the blind outward for extra clearance and overhead shade.

Angled positioning is site-dependent and is generally better suited to sheltered installations. We confirm the fixing points, fabric tension and wind exposure during the measure.

Fabric options

Choose filtered shade or a clearer weather barrier.

Solar mesh

Shade, airflow and daytime privacy

Mesh reduces glare and heat while retaining ventilation and a filtered outward view. Colours and openness factors can be selected to suit the building.

Clear PVC

Visibility with greater wind and rain protection

Clear PVC suits cafe frontages and entertaining areas where preserving the outlook is more important than privacy or airflow.

Operation options

Controlled by hand or at the push of a button.

Most common

Manual crank handle

A geared crank provides smooth, controlled raising and lowering. The handle can be removed when not in use for a cleaner finish.

Convenient

Motorised control

Useful for large, high or frequently operated blinds. Motor suitability depends on blind size, fabric and the available power supply.

Straight drop or Ziptrak?

The right choice depends on how much guidance and sealing the space needs.

Choose straight drop whenYou want fewer visible components, have limited side fixing points, need an adaptable bottom restraint or prefer a simpler system.
Consider Ziptrak whenYou need fabric retained continuously in side tracks, reduced side gaps, easier stop-at-any-height operation or better control in more exposed positions.
Wind mattersA free-hanging blind can move more than a track-guided blind. It must be correctly restrained when lowered and retracted during strong winds and severe weather.

Common questions

Before choosing straight drop blinds.

Do straight drop blinds need side tracks?

No. The fabric hangs freely from the headbox and is secured at the bottom when lowered. This makes the system useful where side channels cannot be fitted or are not wanted.

Can a straight drop blind be installed on an angle?

The blind rolls vertically, but in some sheltered installations the bottom rail can be secured outward to suitable lower anchor points. The available structure, fabric tension and wind exposure must be assessed first.

How is the blind held down?

Depending on the site, bottom restraints may include straps, clips, pins, hooks or tie-down points fixed to a sound structural surface.

Can I use clear PVC and mesh on the same project?

Yes. Different openings can use different materials, or a project can combine clear PVC for visibility with mesh where shade and privacy are more important.

Are straight drop blinds suitable for windy areas?

They provide useful weather protection but do not retain the fabric inside side tracks. Keep the blind correctly restrained when lowered and retract it during strong winds, storms and severe weather.
